Dinosaurs come alive like never before in this costly computer-animated film from Disney. After a breathtaking opening (a dino egg is kidnapped), the film changes style; realistic dinosaurs are given human characteristics and voices. The kidnapped egg grows into an iguanodon named Aladar (voiced by D.B. Sweeney), who is raised by lemurs (shades of Tarzan) on a lush island void of other dinosaurs. When a meteorite destroys their island home in a thrilling sequnce, the lemur family and Aladar become part of a dinosaur troop roaming the mainland deserts looking for the lush nesting grounds (shades of the fourth installment of the Land Before Time series and Fantasia). Disney’s usual mix of modern language (one lemur calls himself “a love monkey”) is present, as is its typical capital punishment law: anyone against our forward-thinking hero (or even disagreeing with him) ends up dead. Curiously, the meanies, a pair of carnotaurs following the group, are nameless and voiceless. This more realistic approach might have been a bigger wow, as in the BBC’s Walking with Dinosaurs, which looked extraordinary with only a fraction of the budget. The complexity and scope of Dinosaur’s visual scale is impressive, and group shots and a point-of-view angle are stunning. Rated PG for general intensity, the film should be a favorite for the 6- to 11-year-old set. –Doug Thomas

Horribly burned and scarred, he uses synthetic skin to impersonate his would-be murderers and seek retribution for their evil deeds. While the film has an average script, it is overcome by the flashy cinematography of Bill Pope, the bombastic score by Danny Elfman, and the well-choreographed direction of Sam Raimi. The director confidently walks the line between suspense, action, comedy, and romance as he examines a bitter, victimized antihero who risks becoming as monstrous on the inside as he appears on the outside. –Bryan Reesman

Darkman II
Sam Raimi created Darkman with a potential franchise in mind, and his original movie had enough flair to suggest a sequl was warranted. Unfortunately (or perhaps wisely–for Raimi), he handed over the straight-to-video sequl duties to rookie director Bradford May, and nobody bothered to come up with much of a screenplay. As a result, Darkman II plays like a bad pilot for a proposed Darkman TV series, with Arnold Vosloo (The Mummy) doing his best to replace Liam Neeson in the title role. Sporting a dastardly scar and delivering lackluster punch lines as he kills his many enemies, Larry Drake returns from the first film as the villainous Durant, who wreaks havoc in his attempt to finance and manufacture the world’s most destructive automatic weapons. As he supports the synthetic skin experiments of a like-minded scientist, the scarred hero known as Darkman thwarts Durant’s ruthless plot, but the case proves costly for the intrepid crime reporter (Kim Delaney, pre-NYPD Blu) who allies herself with Darkman’s efforts. Basically, this by-the-numbers plot serves as a tissu-thin vehicle for lots of explosions and gratuitous violence, and it’s all about as inspired as a bad syndicated action show. Of interest only to those who were dazzled by the original Darkman, and even then it’s a disappointment. –Jeff Shannon

Even more effective is the contrast between the charmingly effusive Arthur and McCrea’s sauntering style, which creates not so much sparks as a slow simmer as they continu to spend time together.
